About

From craft to connection.

Why SO–EN JAPAN exists, and how we work.

The Name

“So-en” — the ties that connect.

Our name draws on the Japanese word en (縁) — the meaningful connections that form between people, often across distance and time.

SO–EN JAPAN is built on three such connections: between Japanese artisans and shops overseas, between Japanese tradition and contemporary life, and between regional culture and the wider world.

Why We Started

Remarkable work,
rarely reaching the world.

Across Japan, small workshops continue to produce work of exceptional quality. Yet many face shrinking domestic markets, aging successors, and little access to international buyers.

On the other side, overseas retailers and designers who want authentic Japanese craft often struggle with language, sourcing, minimums and logistics — and with knowing what is genuinely made where it claims to be. SO–EN JAPAN exists to close that gap in both directions.

Our Mission

To create meaningful connections between Japanese makers and the world.

We do not simply export objects. We carry their context — the maker, the region, the material, the process, the time — so that what arrives in your store is understood, valued and cared for.

How We Work

Four commitments.

01

Respect for makers

Artisans are partners, not suppliers. We work at a pace and scale that respects how their work is actually made.

02

Honest storytelling

We tell the story behind each piece without exaggeration. No invented history, no unverifiable claims.

03

Thoughtful selection

We curate a focused range rather than a large catalog — pieces that can live in contemporary spaces worldwide.

04

Long-term relationships

With workshops and with buyers alike, we prefer steady, appropriately scaled trade over one-off volume.

Looking Ahead

Indigo first.
Then, wider Japan.

We begin with Japanese indigo — a craft whose depth we can present with confidence. From this starting point, we plan to extend into woodwork, bamboo, ceramics, washi paper, weaving, lacquerware and metal craft.

Each new field will be added the same way: through direct relationships with workshops, and with the background of the work told honestly.
